Pelham Youth Rugby Plays At Iona College

PELHAM, N.Y. – Pelham Youth Rugby participated in the first annual Iona College Founder’s Day Youth Rugby Festival.

Iona College’s Rugby Club hosted the clinic on Columbus Day at their new rugby pitch in the middle of campus. Iona hopes to make the clinic a yearly event and Pelham was the first team the school invited.

The youngsters divided into groups led by Pelham Youth Rugby coaches Jamie McClellon, Alex Whillen, Dave Biskup and Spencer Scanlon. New York Athletic Club and USA Eagle player Toby LeStrange, who also coaches for Pelham, Play Rugby’s Christian Mayo and Iona rugby coach Pat Fiffe also led groups.

The under-13 team practiced on a full field but the under-15 team got an opportunity to use Iona’s new scrum machine. Some of the Gaels demonstrated how to use the device to the players.

Pelham’s two teams also played in games at the event. The U13 team lost to Manhattan Youth Rugby and Pelham named Cameron Ward as the Player of the Game.

The U15 team defeated Manhattan by tallying 21 tries and allowing just two. Each player on Pelham’s team scored on at least two tries. Nick Roll earned Player of the Game honors.
