Pelham Diver Wins National Championship

PELHAM, N.Y. – Pelham diver Jennifer Bell won the AAU National Diving Championships in the three-meter springboard event for the girls 11-and-under division Thursday afternoon in Huntersville, N.C.

Bell vaulted to victory with her final dive, an inward 1 1/2 somersault tuck. She earned a personal best 41.80 points on that dive and finished with 162.85 points, a full 18.15 points ahead of Florida's Ashley Gonzalez, who finished with 144.70 points.

Bell also took first place in the preliminary round on Thursday morning, though the scores in that round were much closer . She accumulated 156.00 points through five rounds of diving in the preliminaries, just 2.70 points ahead of the second place finisher and 3.10 points ahead of the third place finisher.

She finished second nationally in the platform diving event for her age group on Wednesday. She was in first place after her last dive, but the eventual first place finisher overtook Bell on her final dive.

Bell will compete in her third and final event, the one-meter springboard, on Saturday.
