PELHAM, N.Y. – Senior Helen Gandler could not have asked for a better two years on the Pelham High School varsity volleyball team.
Gandler was instrumental in leading Pelham to its second consecutive Section 1 Class B championship and a return trip to the state final four.
Gandler’s impact on Pelham has resulted in her being selected The Pelham Daily Voice Student-Athlete of the Month.
“What made this special was that every day I got to play the game I love with a lot of my best friends,” Gandler said. “Our team came together and we all became friends and it was great that everyone got to experience something so awesome.”
Pelham coach Mark Finegan had high praise for Gandler, who was an all-section and all-state selection.
“Helen is the most complete, all-around player I have coached in my 23 years,” Finegan said. “The combination she possesses of passing, hitting, blocking and serving makes her able to affect the flow of the match every time the ball comes over the net.
“When we were down one set to none to Hen Hud and Owego, Helen put us on her back and carried us to victory. She is incredibly driven and focused. It has been my great pleasure to coach her.”
Pelham graduated a talented senior class, but Gandler and her classmates continued the tradition of outstanding play.
“We had a great scope of talent and a lot of determination so it was not a surprise when we made it to the state final four,” Gandler said. “We were expecting to make it even further.”
Even though the high school volleyball season just concluded, Gandler has witnessed the determination in next year’s returning players.
“They are already working out in the fitness center,” Gandler said. “There is a lot of talent on the team. I have complete faith in them.”
