Bronxville Track Star Cain Heads to State Meet

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Bronxville High School sophomore track sensation Mary Cain has already accomplished much at such a young age. She will try to add to her already impressive resume at the state track meet at Cicero-North Syracuse High School on Saturday.

Cain broke her own state record for the third time in the 1,500 meter event with a time of 4:16.52 at the Section 1 state qualifying meet on June 1 at White Plains High School. She is the defending state champion in that event.

Moreover, she finally shaved the necessary seconds off her time in the 1,500 meter to break the barrier necessary for the chance to participate in Olympic Trials. Cain’s previous best time was 4:17.1, just one-tenth of a second shy of the provisional “B” standard of 4:17, but she trimmed off enough time to reach her goal. The automatic “A” standard is 4:12.93.

Cain also surpassed the “B” standard of 2:05.90 in the 800 meter event with a time of 2:03.34. The “A” standard is 2:01.30.

Thirty female athletes will make up the field in both the 800 and 1,500 meter trials, according to the official site of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials.
