PELHAM, N.Y. -- Teary-eyed Pelham Middle School parents watched their not-so-little Pelicans soar into the world of high school and beyond Tuesday night.

Approximately 236 students graduated from the school, many of whom will attend Pelham Memorial High School as freshmen in the fall. Others will be moving on to various private and parochial schools.

Lisa Kiernan, president of the Board of Education, shared her remarks about the importance of academics, and how prepared she felt the students are to take on the challenges to come ahead.

Superintendent Peter Giarrizzo reminded the students of the importance of working together as a team, and not waiting until the end of high school to make bonds with their class.

Julianne Argento, eighth grade class president, recounted memories the class shared over the past three years with eloquence and a flair of humor.

Parents also enjoyed a spirited performance of "The Raiders March," by the eighth grade band, and a collection of self portraits done by the students, accompanied by meaningful quotes.

Bridget Barsanti quoted Oscar Wilde on her poster, "To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all."

The Class of 2014 also installed a permanent mural of popular, recent album covers in the auditorium.

Check back with Daily Voice on Friday, June 27, for an end-of-year interview with Superintendent Peter Giarrizzo.
