Pelham Library Encourages Kids To Dig Summer Reading

PELHAM, N.Y. - Summer is a time of beaches, barbecues and - if the Pelham Library has its way - books.

"People are often surprised when I tell them that summer is our busiest time,” Library director Patricia Perito said on the library's website. ”It's a fun kind of busy. Sometimes I think the staff has just as much fun as the kids with the summer reading game.”

The library's Dig Into Reading program for children in pre-school through eighth grade. The program features a game to motivate children to read, arts and crafts, movies and more.

“If kids don’t do any reading over the summer, they drop precipitously in their reading skills,” said children’s services librarian Lilly Hecker.

Pre-schoolers win a book prize every time they listen to six stories; school-age children earn a book prize every time they read three age-appropriate books. There are also additional prizes in the Library’s treasure chest, and the Summer Reading Game culminates with an end-of-summer ice cream party on Tuesday, Aug. 27 at 3 p.m.

The program is free but registration is required. Registration begins sign-up begins June 26 and continues through July 31.The program kicks off on June 25 at 11 a.m. with a visit from Dino-man, who will take his audience through an exploration of the heavens, touching on topics including dinosaurs, meteors, comets, liquid air, and even goldfish – the inedible kind.
