Pelham Memorial High School recently released its 20 page summer reading list for 2013 – packed with selections of fiction and non-fiction books, extra-challenging reads and even teacher recommendations.

The list ranges from classics such as Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, to fun sci-fi thrillers like The Mummy by Anne Rice, to more contemporary literature such as The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.

The school’s English department, which compiled the list, states its aims in a foreword, explaining that reading enables students “to travel into worlds beyond our own, nurturing our imaginations, our minds, and our spirits.”

The foreword targets family bonding, encouraging parents to read with their children. It suggests different ideas – such as buying a book on audiotape to listen on long family car trips - in order to discuss the literature and expand the student’s understanding.

Students are required to choose three books from the list, while those in advanced placement courses must choose four or five depending on grade level.

The list can be found on the school’s website.
