Sidelined for Super Bowl: Woe is Pelham Jets Fans

PELHAM, N.Y. – While millions of football fans throughout Pelham and the rest of the country gather around the television to watch Super Bowl XLVI between the New York Giants and New England Patriots, New York Jets fans say they’re in an awkward position.

Do they root for the Patriots, their archrival, or the Giants, a state rival?  Most area Jets fans told The Daily Pelham they aren’t looking forward to watching the big game.

“I’m hoping the Patriots win it, so I don’t have to hear the Giants fans,” Joe Dereishi said. The Pelham Memorial High School junior considers himself a diehard Jets fan in a school filled with plenty of Giants fans.

Still, Dereishi said he doesn’t expect the Patriots to have an easy win.

“I think that it should be a close game, but the Patriots are going to pull it out,” he said.

John Juliano is not sure if he will even watch the rematch of Super Bowl XLII when the Giants ruined the Patriots perfect season, 17-14.

“It’s terrible,” Juliano said. “I can barely watch the game.”

Juliano said he hasn’t quite decided on which team to root for in Sunday’s big game, but is leaning towards the Giants.

“Do I take guff from Giant fans or do I take guff from Patriot fans? I’m going to take it either way, but I think I’d rather take it from the Patriot fans because I don’t live in New England. I don’t see them as often. The Giants, forget it. I see them all the time. My father, forget it, he’d be all over me.”

Jets fan, Angelo Lucareli, manager of DeCicco’s Food Market said he won’t be rooting for either team, but thinks the Giants will pull off the win.

“It stinks, I’m just watching the boxes, that’s all,” he said. “I think the Giants are going to win by 10 because it’s going to come down to the defensive and offensive lines. I don’t think the Patriots secondary is that good and I think Manning is able to make big plays.”
