Robert Benkwitt Named Pelham Fire Lieutenant

PELHAM, N.Y. – Mayor Ed Hotchkiss swore in Robert Benkwitt as a lieutenant in the Pelham Fire Department at this week's board meeting.

The appointment was retroactive to July 16.

Benkwitt's family watched on Tuesday evening as he took the oath and posed for pictures with the mayor.

The board also named Francesco Bellantoni as a firefighter in the department because Benkwitt's appointment left an open slot in the ranks.

Other news from the meeting:

- The board authorized the Pelham Chamber of Commerce to hold a street fair on Saturday, Oct. 15.

- The board updated its procurement policy because state standards have changed. Hotchkiss said in the past, items that cost $1,000 required board resolutions, which was inefficient. Commodities, equipment and goods must now cost at least $20,000 and items for the Department of Public Works must cost at least $35,000 to come before the board for approval. Village administrator Robert Yamuder said those numbers increased from $10,000 and $20,000, respectively, because the state realized that goods have become more expensive.
