PELHAM, N.Y. Timeless Treasures hosted an exhibit of the late Pelham resident Jack Jacques LiBuonos jewelry on Saturday from 10 a.m. 5 p.m.
LiBuono designed and manufactured jewelry for famous designers such as Kenneth Lane, Hattie Carnegie, and Yves St. Lauren.
There were necklaces, pins, bracelets, rings, and countless other items on display at the store.
His son, James LiBuono, was showing off the jewelry and explained the process that the designers would go through with his father.
These are one of a kind pieces, prototypes, said LiBuono. These are like the original samples. Hed make this piece up, hed show it to Kenneth [Lane] or Hattie Carnegie, Oh, I like it. Well take a dozen or two dozen of these. So hed make it up, put their cartouche on it, and would keep the original sample of course.
LiBuono is glad that over a decade after his fathers death, he is still honored for his work.
The best part about it is that its like hes remembered, said LiBuono. Its like an honor to him, which he would be very surprised today to see this because he never was the type to seek fame or fortune. He did what he loved.
Libuono, who died in 1996 at the age of 81, designed the Miss New York State beauty pageant crown and had Julie Newmar and Barbara Streisand as customers.
He started working for Vogue Jewelry in the late 1920s after dropping out of school, according to his son. At the age of 19, he became the manager of Vogue Jewelry. He would later go on to work at Bell Laboratories before opening his own jewelry store.
James LiBuono, who now lives in New Rochelle but grew up in Pelham, remembered watching Kenneth Lane on television say that his father had magic hands.
Kit Potrafke, the owner of Timeless Treasures, was happy to host the free event and could not believe the talent that James father had.
I think the jewelry is fabulous and Ive never even been into jewelry before, she said. I have a crush on James father because he was so talented and handsome. More than that, he was very talented, creative, and ahead of his time. Im happy to display all of this because I think its wonderful.
