PELHAM, N.Y. Millions throughout the country tuned in for President Barack Obamas State of the Union address on Tuesday night. Many Pelham residents wanted the president to focus his speech on the economy and unemployment . Some had mixed feelings about how well the president addressed those issues in his third State of the Union since taking office.
He didnt do enough, said Ronnie Oravc. The country is in a bad time.
Oravc, a retired Marine who served for four years, is concerned about the future of the United States because of the unemployment rate.
We gotta get something started jobs mostly, Oravc said. We gotta start getting people jobs.
Maureen Abrams, a Democrat, thought the president delivered a great speech and plans on voting for him in November.
I think he is a fabulous speaker and it (the State of the Union) made a lot of sense to me, said Abrams.
Abrams is tired of the class warfare that has been going on recently and thinks that Republicans should rethink their tax policies.
The word fairness is really going to resonate because Im sick and tired of hearing Republicans talking about saving the rich from being taxed while the middle class is suffering, Abrams said. Im with him (Obama).
James Tyrrell also believes that Obama is a brilliant speaker and thought it was a good speech.
Hes a good speaker. Hes got that gift. I think he made some good points. Overall, I was very pleased with his speech, Tyrrell said. Theres hope that the economy is turning around.
