Pelham Residents Attend AARP Driving Safety Course

PELHAM, N.Y. – The senior citizens of Pelham gathered in Daronco Town House for an AARP Driver Safety Program from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The longtime instructor, Lucille Kinney, was pleased with how well the course went.

“Very well,” Kinney said. “They were very well-behaved.”

Kinney mentioned that during other courses, she sometimes has to use a whistle to get the attention of people that are talking over her.

The course, which cost $17 for AARP members and $19 for those who are not members, lasted six hours and focused on various driving safety tips for senior citizens.

The course brings to the seniors’ attention to “What they can’t do or see as they get older,” Kinney said. “Their vision, their hearing, and reaction time – it’s like a refresher course.”

Kinney led the class through an AARP-issued senior citizens driver’s manual. She explored various items such as when to know to stop driving, warning signs to look for as you get older and tips for senior citizens when buying a new car.

Kinney, who has been teaching the course since 1993 in various parts of Westchester County, said she has always warned her classes to participate and pay attention.

“I tell them right off and even in the book it says, “You’ll only get out of this course what you put into it,” Kinney said. “If you don’t participate, you’re not getting anything out of it."

Kinney admitted that most of her students through the years have just taken the course for the 10 percent insurance discount.

She has taught people as old as 95 and as young as 16 in the course. However, “Some of them do say, ‘oh, I learned something new,” Kinney said.
