PELHAM, N.Y. It could be said that a pizzeria owners favorite holiday is Lent because of the boost in sales that comes from Christians abstaining from meat on Fridays. Two local pizza places, Marcellos Pizza and Pelham Pizzeria and Ristorante, reaped the rewards of Ash Wednesday and are looking forward to future business on Fridays.
It was a good day for us, said John Ruffolo, a worker at Pelham Pizzeria. It was busy, very busy, but its expected on that night.
He said the restaurant always looks forward to Lent because of how much busier it gets.
Its a busy season for us, said Ruffolo. You have churchgoers that dont eat meat, so its a good couple of weeks for us. Its good for us.
Lent, which lasts 40 days from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday, is a major liturgical season in churches.
Jose Perez of Marcellos Pizza said that the restaurant has been busy throughout the week because of the school break.
We have been busy because the kids are off from school, he said. Everybodys in town. He said that Wednesday was good.
As for the next few weeks of Lent, Perez is ready along with the rest of the staff at Marcellos.
Were here, said Perez. Were always expecting good business. Thats what were here for to serve you guys and make money.
