Pelham Mothers Start Decorative Email Company

PELHAM, N.Y. – Sharon Gaffney met Shana Clarke at a backyard barbecue in 2009. Today the two run a business together out of their homes.Gaffney is the co-founder and creative director of MeebleMail, an online company that turns ordinary emails into decorative correspondence akin to beautiful stationery."The idea came from my love of paper stationery," Gaffney said. "But the reality was that most of my communication was through email."Gaffney said that no company produced stylish emails, so she decided to start the business. Currently, the company only employs about five people, but Gaffney has begun to look for office space in Pelham.Though the company has already picked up a following in the south and has been featured in a magazine on the West Coast, its roots are in Pelham. MeebleMail conducted focus groups in Pelham and had local residents beta test the service."Pelham is such a great, diverse community as far as occupations," Gaffney said.Clarke added that it is great "to have the support from your backyard."The company recently donated $10,000 in proceeds to breast cancer research. Both Gaffney and Clarke have had relatives and friends diagnosed with breast cancer, so they decided to add a charitable component to MeebleMail."It's definitely a cause we cared about," Gaffney said.Gaffney has a child who will turn five on Sunday and an eight-month old baby. Clarke has a seven-year-old child and three-and-a-half-year-old twins. Working from home allows the mothers to juggle both their work and maternal responsibilities. The pair would like to move MeebleMail into an office in Pelham and grow. Gaffney said she hopes MeebleMail can help create jobs in the area, but has kept her expectations realistic.
