Pelham Manor Police Say Man, 57, Stole Red Bull

PELHAM MANOR, N.Y. – A 57-year-old Bronx man was arrested about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday after he stole three 24-packs of Red Bull from the Five Below teen discount store in the Pelham Manor Shopping Center, the Pelham Manor police said.

Anthony Smith is accused of shoplifting $172.69 worth of the popular energy drink. He was arraigned on a charge of misdemeanor petty larceny, and bail was set at $2,500.

The police were first called by the manager of the Marshalls shoe store at 849 Pelham Parkway, who said a man who had stolen from that store in the past was in the store again. En route to Marshalls, officers were given the suspect's description, and while canvassing the area, an officer saw a man matching the description leaving the Five Below store at 846 Pelham Parkway.

The man was pushing a shopping cart filled with the Red Bull, police said. The officer asked the suspect if he had been in Marshalls, and Smith said that he had been five minutes earlier looking for his friend, police said.

Smith was then handcuffed and taken to Marshalls, where the manager identified him as the person in question, police said. At that time, no charges were placed. Smith was then taken back to Five Below, and was identified there as the man who had stolen the Red Bull, police said. Smith then was arrested.

While in the patrol car on the way to police headquarters, Smith became “very irate” and was kicking the car “violently,” police said. While at headquarters, he continued to act “in a violent manner,” and was placed in a cell.

Smith is due back in court Thursday night.
