Pelham Man Eager to Help Business Council

PELHAM MANOR, N.Y. – Pelham Manor resident John Ravitz is set to begin his latest job as executive vice president of the Business Council of Westchester on Oct. 31. Until then, he is spending time with his family and preparing for his new role. Ravitz will oversee both the legislative affairs and community development departments of the council. The key function of his job will be to promote job growth and job retention in Westchester, which is a task he knows is of the utmost importance. "To me, that's probably the biggest issue facing the country," Ravitz said. The father of four said this latest opportunity came when he was not looking for it, but added that it was "too exciting to walk away from." While he is a bit nervous about the new job, the diversity of the members around him will help him in his new position. "That takes some of the edge off and some of the concerns right away," Ravitz said. Ravitz has served in a variety of positions in both politics and social work. He was a New York State Assemblyman from 1991 to 2002. He then became the executive director of the New York Board of Elections until 2007 and then served as the CEO of the Westchester chapter of the American Red Cross. Ravitz and his family have lived in Pelham since 2004. He coaches three youth basketball teams in the area. Ravitz said that it is important to him that he has time to see his children and he will be able to do that now that he will be working mostly in Westchester instead of New York City.
