PELHAM, N.Y. Valentines Day is special for couples, as well as for the local florists and jewelry stores that benefit from the holiday rush.
Were too busy to actually talk to you, said Lidia Mascolino of the Pelham Manor Florist. We have pickups for people that are going to come in. Its not a day for chitchat or for interviews.
Mascolino was not sure how well sales would turn out because she still had last minute husbands coming in at night.
I dont know until the end of the day because everyone comes in after work, said Mascolino. They dont come in during the day. They come in after work on their way home.
But at LaGravinese Jewelers, sales arent up for Valentines Day, due to the economy.
Sales are pretty good, said sales employee Stephanie King. Theyre down a little bit, I would say.
King said that the majority of gifts people bought were heart necklaces, but that today will be more than just a holiday for certain couples.
Weve had quite a few engagements, King said. I know there were a couple that were getting engaged today.
Kings favorite part of the holiday is not only making money, but seeing people in love, because its nice.
