PELHAM, N.Y. Pelham Manor resident Nancy Lepre has visited the Pelham Farmers Market almost every weekend this season. Saturday was the last day for the market this year and Lepre said she will miss it.
I like to support local growers, Lepre said.
The 28-year Pelham Manor resident went to the market more often this year because Community Markets decided to hold it on Saturdays. Lepre said the vendors began to recognize her and greeted her each week.
Lepre said that she will buy her produce at the supermarket until the market returns next year and will miss the farmers market this winter. She said she will absolutely return to the Pelham Farmers Market next season.
The vendors at the market have set up shop in heat, rain and even snow in the past several months. On Saturday, Migliorelli Farms vendor Lobsang Dawa sold fruits and vegetables to customers for the last time this year.
Its definitely a sad day, Dawa said. We wont be able to serve our customer base.
Until the market returns next season, Dawa will work at a year-round market in Union Square in New York City. He rated this year as better than last year for the Pelham Farmers Market and had an idea to improve it next season.
If they have more vendors, (customers) can just get all their groceries here, Dawa said.
Community Markets site manager Michelle McBriarty will no longer have to commute to Pelham from New Jersey each week. She said she would have never gotten to know Pelham had she not driven to the market and reflected on the relationships she and the vendors cultivated during the year.
We made a lot of great connections here, McBriarty said. We really got to know people.
