PELHAM, N.Y. Students in Pelham will return to school in a few weeks and Lori Woliner of the Pelham Children's Center will soon prepare her staff for the center's after-school program. The staff will receive training in some unique subjects to teach the children.
The Pelham Children's Center partners with Hutchinson Elementary School and Colonial Elementary School to provide an after-school program for their students. Next week, the staff at the center will learn techniques, including yoga and European music, that they will incorporate into their classes this fall.
"Next week will be a big week for (preparation)," Woliner said. "We'll be having training on all kinds of things."
The after school program begins on Sept. 7.
Woliner's staff will train to teach Dalcroze, a European style of music and movement, to the children at the center. A specialist will also teach the staff next week how to use yoga in the classroom.
The staff will also train in child development, team building and conflict resolution for both the staff and the children. Finally, the teachers will learn how to use Young Explorer computers, though that training will occur later.
Woliner said the unique training is part of her desire to energize the center. "My main objective is to cover as many things that are interesting and exciting," Woliner said.
The staff at the center will also perform maintenance and cleaning and will put out new supplies and materials in preparation for September.
Woliner took over as executive director of the Pelham Children's Center in May. This fall will be her first as director, but she said she is eagerly anticipating the start of the school year.
"I'm excited," Woliner said. "I'm looking forward to sharing ideas and bringing some ideas from my past experiences. I feel confident."
