PELHAM, N.Y. The Pelham Arts Center will be celebrating the Chinese New Year through different art activities on Saturday afternoon.
We have three art workshops planned, said the gallery and public programs manager, Laura Nicholas. The first is dragon puppet making, which is a paper craft. The second one is calligraphic brush painting and the third one is also a paper craft its a mythology about gods and goddesses and participants can color in.
The event, which will run from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., is free and open to people of all ages. Guests are allowed to drop in and drop out when theyre able and start any of the activities when they can, according to Nicholas.
While the Chinese New Year takes place on Monday, Jan. 23, the arts center has always held a commemoration program in honor of the holiday.
The Chinese New Year event is one of the folk arts events that the Pelham Art Center has done for many years and its a part of our folk arts series, Nicholas said. Its always around this time of the year. Its usually one of our most popular events.
The different activities will be based on the animal of the new year the dragon.
The activities are new year specific, Nicholas said. Its the year of the dragon, which is why the dragon is going to be a visual theme in the art workshops. The myths or folklores that well be hearing about are also Chinese New Year specific.
Saturdays event will be Nicholas first at the center, but she is looking forward to a big turnout.
Its my understanding that this event, as well as some other events towards the end of the year, are really popular, especially with families, Nicholas said.
Nicholas has heard about the possible snow, but she is not worried about its potential effect on the event.
There is some concern about snow, but its my understanding we dont cancel or have never canceled events in the past, Nicholas said. We dont plan to unless theres something really major.
