Pelham and Pelham Manor, Did You Know ...?

PELHAM, N.Y. – That the town of Pelham is the oldest in Westchester County. According to the town’s website , Thomas Pell bought the land in a 1654 treaty with the Siwanoy Indians in addition to “all of the Bronx, and the land along Long Island Sound, north to the Rye border.”

He named the town after his tutor, Pelham Burton, the website said.

In 1895, Pelham was compacted to its current size, but it once included “all of City Island and what is now Pelham Bay Park east of the Hutchinson River.” Three villages “were incorporated within the Town,” including Pelham Manor in 1891 and North Pelham and Pelham in 1896, the website said.

However, in 1975, the villages of North Pelham and Pelham combined and are known to this day as the village of Pelham, the website said.
