Pelham Allergy Sufferers Sneeze And Bear It

PELHAM, N.Y. – As Pelham residents swelter in the hot summer temperatures, some, such as Jose Perez, are sneezing and sniffling their way through another season of allergies.

A big question for those who are prone to allergy attacks is whether to seek relief from medications or to simply tough it out.

“No, no, no, I don’t believe in pills,” said Perez, who works at Marcello’s Pizza. “They might help your allergy, but they might destroy something else – like your kidney, your liver. Allergy pills are very bad for your organs, so I don’t deal with no pills.”

Perez said “pollen from the trees kills me,” but he prefers to deal with his allergies “the natural way,” because of how expensive the pills are. He added that the allergies, which he suffers the most from during summer and spring, have gotten worse with age. He does not remember having allergies when he was younger.

Klein Pharmacy has not seen an increase in people buying allergy medicine.

James Paul, who works at Klein Pharmacy on Fifth Avenue in Pelham, said “Everybody suffers allergies all year,” and he has not seen allergy sufferers come into the store more often lately.

“We haven’t seen that they’ve come up with any specific summer allergies, but it’s just allergy season’s always around.”

Those that do come in seeking relief often buy Claritin and Zyrtec, Paul said.

Perez, who lives in the Bronx, is philosophical about his situation.

“When you suffer from allergies, you suffer from allergies the rest of your life,” he said. “But you got to live with that. We all have a problem.”
