MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Mount Vernon High School students were kept inside the building on Friday afternoon after a bomb threat was phoned into the district.

Students were held inside while police officials inspected the perimeter of the school, according to Public Information Officer Vanessa Ridder.

Principal Ronald Gonzalez confirmed that the threat was called into the main phone line at 10:21 a.m. One of the school’s secretaries answered the call, when a female caller warned that there was a bomb in the front of the building.

The Mount Vernon police and fire departments were alerted, and an e-mail was sent to staff warning that the school was going into lockdown mode. The school day went on as regularly scheduled while the search was initiated.

The district was given official clearance by police slightly longer than an hour after the threat at 11:40 a.m.

The Mount Vernon bomb threat comes on the heels of two similar threats that were reportedly made at Walter Panas High School in Cortlandt and Lakeland High in Shrub Oak.
