Free Pelham Parking Meter Policy Goes into Effect

PELHAM, N.Y. - The parking meters on Fifth Avenue, Wolfs Lane, and other local side streets are free from Friday until December 27. The decision to "bag" the meters received a unanimous vote at the last Village Board meeting.

"Times are tough, so we understand that," said village administrator Robert Yamuder. "We've always bagged the meters for a couple of weeks between the holidays and for the shopping. Generally, we feel it's good for the merchants and good for the shoppers. It gives them a break," said Yamuder.

He was quick to point out that the two-hour parking rule is still in effect.

"You still have to abide by the enforcement rules of the two-hour parking, but you don't have to pay for it," said Yamuder. "They still have to move every two hours, but again I think it helps during the season and it's a nice gesture. They've come to expect that. I think it's also good for the merchants. It's a feel good thing. It keeps the people shopping downtown."

One Pelham resident was already glad that the meters were free.

"I was just telling my wife that it's such a pleasure because I'm in and out of these stores all the time," said Bruce Withers. "It's such a pleasure for these couple of weeks to not have to worry about looking for quarters."
