PELHAM, N.Y. -- County Legislator Jim Maisano (R, D11) cites Pelham's civic involvement as one of the town's biggest highlights of 2013.

"Pelham is an interesting community, he said. "It's mostly a bedroom community. It has a ton of people that commute in and out of Manhttan. However, it has very engaged citizen groups that do wonderful work."

He cited Pelham's new $1.3 million turf field as an example, which was completely funded by citizen groups after a referendum did not pass in its favor.

The turf field is now used for games and practices by interscholastic and recreational teams. It is the community’s first synthetic turf field.

"It opened the third week of October, and it's really impressive," he said, "It's another sign of their engagement. When the people of Pelham put their mind to something, it gains enormous civic involvement."

He also looked, specifically, to the Pelham Civic Association and Pelham Junior League .

"These groups do some really great public work," he said, "They have a lot of volunteers: 60-70 people totally engaged on project. You don't see that everywhere."

He lauded the Civic Association for helping underprivileged kids prepare for the SATs by raising money to pay for their classes and materials.

Additionally, he praised the Junior League for their involvement in human trafficking awareness.

He said, "Pelham has some great groups. People get involved, they volunteer and they work. That's the thing that shines."
