PELHAM, N.Y. Kids looking for a creative outlet can find a perfect fit at the Pelham Art Center, which offers summer classes that are taught by professional artists.
The classes are going really well, Director Lynn Honeysett said. Theres genuine creative exploration here, whether theyre making a pot or theyre creating a masterpiece in the style of a master, or they're using a new medium. Its a wonderful opportunity."
The Summer Art Makers program is for children ages 4 to 10. It started Monday, July 9, and continues weekly through Friday, Aug. 3. Kids can go for full or half-day classes where they can paint, draw and work with mixed media, collage, crafts, clay, puppets and more.
It is a win-win for a parent because their kid has something different to do every day of the week and it is super flexible, Honeysett said. Students benefit academically from their involvement in the program because creativity enhances the brain, she said.
I just read an article that is linking academic achievement with involvement with the arts and saying that kids who actively participate in the arts score better. It makes sense, said Honeysett. It just seems to exercise that creative muscle.
She reminisced about an art summer camp she took part in as a high school student. It was an extraordinary experience to deepen something you might not get a lot of during the year, Honeysett said.
Half-day morning classes run 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and cost $300, or $270 for members. Half-day afternoon classes are 1:30 to 5 p.m. and cost $263, or $236 for members. Full-day classes are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and cost $600, or $540 for members.
Art Masters is another summer class for kids ages 8 to 14. Other classes can be found on the Pelham Art Center's website. You can also call to register at (914) 738-2525, Ext. 111.
