Five Questions for Pelham's Lola's Tea House Owner

PELHAM, N.Y. – Mount Vernon resident Leslie Allicks owns Lola's Tea House on Fifth Avenue in Pelham. She opened the shop in honor of her late father who passed away after a battle with colon cancer.

Question: What is your favorite aspect of Pelham?

Answer: It's close to home. It's unique in that it's suburban and yet there's something city-like about it.

Q: How would you characterize your relationship with your customers?

A: We have a lot of first-name basis customers and customers who trust us with their kids. My goal is to get them to relax. We get to know a lot of people. We have laptoppers who come in for hours.

Q: Can you remember a particular time when you connected with or influenced a customer?

A: We had a regular lady who got laid off from work. She got off the train and her husband was not home yet. Her first stop was here. She cried and we all sat around her. I felt good that she felt comfortable enough to stay here at the height of her stress.

Q: In a perfect world where money is no issue, what feature or amenity do you wish the tea house had?

A: I wish this place was bigger. I wish I had a party a room. We host a lot of parties, book clubs and baby showers. I wish we had a party room to accommodate larger groups.

Q: Do you think you will ever leave Pelham?

A: (People) think that I am but they're crazy. They think there's going to be a Lola's II. My wish is to stay.
