PELHAM, N.Y. -- The Pelham Library is ready for families with extra time on their hands over the holiday break.

The library is hosting four special programs from Monday, Dec. 23 to Monday, Dec. 30 and story time programs on Tuesday, Dec. 24 and Tuesday, Dec. 31.

"If you’re like a lot of parents with young children, the holidays—and the long vacation break—are a time of family fun and a little anxiety," representatives said. "The 12-day school vacation this holiday season means that even after the presents have been opened, the cousins have left and the food has been eaten, there will still be plenty of days left to entertain the kids."

The following is a round-up of events at the library during the holiday vacation:

Close Encounters of the Animal Kind

At 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, a baby alligator, a chinchilla, a rabbit, a turtle and a python will visit the Library under the auspices of Animal Encounters, a Putnam Valley-based organization that runs educational programs about animals.

In this hands-on program, attendees will not only learn about the visiting mammals and reptiles but also get to see them up close and touch them if they want.

“It’s very inspiring for the kids because they don’t often get to see animals up close that are different from dogs and cats,” said librarian for children’s services Lilly Hecker.

The Library Loves Legos

At 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, the Library will let loose its ample collection of Legos for an hour of fun with the popular building-block toy. No need to bring your own; the Library has plenty.

Lionheart Puppets Perform “The Little Red Hen”

Do your children love a good puppet show? Then have them come to the Library at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27 for a performance of “The Little Red Hen,” as performed by the Vernon, CT-based Lionheart Puppets.

A Magical Afternoon at the Library

Bronx-based magician Emilio Velez will bring his interactive, kids-themed magic show to the Library at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30. Velez—best known to Pelham Library visitors as the man who makes magnificent balloon animals annually on K-Day—promises a show that will actively involve the kids. Velez said of his approach to magic: “I’m there for the kids to help me [with the tricks], so they get the ‘oohs’ and the ‘aahs.’”

The Library programs are free, and none of the holiday week events requires registration. Residents can visit the Pelham Library website for more information.
