July 4th Sales Are Popping At DeCicco's Pelham

PELHAM, N.Y. – DeCicco’s Family Market has seen a welcome boost in sales thanks to the July 4th holiday, says Angelo Lucareli, manager of the Pelham DeCicco's.

“Hamburgers, hot dogs and beer” were the hot items, he said. Other products in demand were chips, fruit platters, watermelons, mixed vegetable platters and sausage. Ice cream was the “main thing” when it came to dessert, he said, plus popsicles. And deli items have been big sellers.

The popular Fifth Avenue supermarket is open the day before and morning of July 4th.

Lucareli said the 28-year-old supermarket is thankful for the holiday boost because “the town starts quieting down” as people go on vacation.

“August is probably the worst month for business here,” said the Yonkers resident.

When it came to his own plans for the patriotic holiday, Lucareli was probably heading to his brother’s in Pleasantville after work Wednesday for a barbecue. If not, he planned on barbecuing at home.

While the holiday provides the supermarket with an increase in sales, Lucareli said, Memorial Day is better.

“Not too many people go away because you’ve got a lot of kids who still have school on Tuesday, so it’s a lot more home things,” he said. "With Fourth of July, a lot of people go away.”

The Bronx native was looking forward to the fireworks, which he always enjoyed growing up.
