PELHAM, N.Y. Crossing guard Tillis A. Roberts stood in his bright orange raincoat on the corner of Colonial and Corlies avenues directing traffic as the school day ended Wednesday. The driving wind and rain did not make his job any easier. But Roberts chose to smile and laugh when asked about how the weather affected his day. "It's terrible," Roberts said. "I don't know why anybody wants to be a crossing guard. It can only be for the love of the children that we stand out here." Roberts said he works on the coldest, hottest and rainiest days of the year in the course of his duties. The silver lining sometimes comes when mountains of snow pile up on the ground. "Hopefully there's no school," Roberts said of those days. Rain and strong wind hit Pelham on Wednesday as gray skies clouded the area. The National Weather Service predicts rain for Pelham until Thursday, with a slight chance of showers returning on Friday night. The weekend will be mostly sunny and high temperatures will be in the mid-60s for the remainder of the week.
