PELHAM, N.Y. - The Pelham Youth Rugby Under-15 team scored an impressive 22-12 victory Thursday over Bermuda's U-15 national team at Randalls Island in New York City Thursday.
The victory was Pelham's first international win as Luke Persanis registered three trys (scores) and got strong support from Josh Quinn, North Westall, Cian Burns, Matt Rabinowitz, Matt Biskup, Kevin Ndou, David Monaco and Morgan Collins.
Pelham dominated the early play against the visitors, who were previously unbeaten on their trip to Canada. Westall sliced through for Pelham ‘s second score, taking the score to 10-0, where it remained until the half.
Shortly after halftime, Quinn looked to score but the whistle had already blown, with the referee awarding a penalty to Pelham. Persanis then drove through a couple of would-be tacklers for Pelham’s third score. Bermuda punched in a score and kicked the conversion to take the score to 15-7 and scored again to cut the Pelham led to 15-12.
With the game still at 15-12, Pelham's defense stuffed Bermuda back into their own end and eventually forced a knock-on. Pelham was awarded a scrum 20 yards out. Off the scrum, Persanis picked up the ball and ran in untouched for his third try and a 20-12 lead. Cian Burns made the conversion to take the score 22-12.
