PELHAM, N.Y. Pelham Youth Rugby played in its first tournament this season last Sunday at Chelsea Waterside Park.
Twelve players on the elementary team participated in four flag games and earned two wins and two ties.
Pelham defeated Manhattan 2, 5-2, in the first match and then beat P.S. 208, 5-3, in the second match. Pelham tied the Manhattan 3 and Manhattan 1 teams in the third and fourth matches, respectively.
A large kiwi mascot handed out coloring books, stickers and other items to the children between matches to promote Kiwifruit for Kids. All the players posed with the mascot after the tournament for a photo.
The under-13 team lost to Manhattan in the tournament but Manhattans coach called Pelham coach Matt Persanis after the match to compliment him on Pelhams improvement. Tamio Shibasaki earned Player of the Game honors for Pelham for his defensive prowess Sunday.
The under-15 team defeated Manhattan despite playing with only 10 players on each side and having only one substitute available after Quinn Scanlon suffered an injury. Pelham scored 20 tries to Manhattans three and eventually started kicking off to the opponent and playing with only nine athletes on the field.
Cian Burns earned Player of the Game honors for Pelham.
