ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The long bus ride and scheduled 7 p.m. did not affect the Pelham volleyball team Thursday. Pelham defeated Section fours Owego, 25-17, 20-25, 25-18, 25-18 in a New York State Class B Volleyball Championship regional semifinal at Elmira Southside High School, presenting coach Mark Finegan with his 300th varsity win. The Pelicans (19-1) advance to the regional final against Section 9 titlist Red Hook Saturday at 2 p.m., at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson. The winner advances to the state final four Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 19 and 20 at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Lauren Keller finished with a match-best 43 assists and Tori Bowser added 15 kills and four blocks as Pelham, like it did against Eastchester, controlled the net. Rachel Courtien led Pelham with four service aces and the Pelicans finished with 16 for the match. We served very well and we were able to keep a very good defensive team off balance, Finegan said. This was a tough back-and-forth match and we were able to keep Owego off balance with a varied attack.
