Pelham Rowers Win Trophy At Prestigious Regatta

PELHAM, N.Y. – The Pelham Community Rowing Association (PCRA) ended its summer season on a high note by medaling at the prestigious Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in Ontario.

Nine PCRA rowers made it to the event, which is considered one of the top three regattas in the world. Pelham hauled in the Thomas G. Gannon Memorial Trophy in the Under 19 Women’s Quadruple Sculls event. The club also had two fourth place finishes and a second place finish in other events.

Pelham battled with powerhouse South Niagara Rowing Club (SNRC), which won the sculls event last year, throughout the race but the PCRA girls pulled away three-quarters of the way through the 2,000-meter race to earn the trophy. The crew finished five seconds ahead of SNRC.

The race also served as a goodbye for four longtime teammates. Liliane Lindsay of Harrison, Tessa Dikkers of Pelham, Yasmine Hemida of Mamaroneck and Claudia Jensen of Bronxville have been in the same boat for two years.

“I couldn’t imagine a better way to end our two year journey in this boat. We have been through so much together,” Lindsay, 15, said. “Having the race of our lives and bringing home the Henley Gold for our club was definitely the perfect way to say goodbye to my teammates as they leave for college.”
