PELHAM, N.Y. The Pelham varsity softball team has had the April 14 home game circled on its calendar all spring.
The Pelicans, who opened the season with three convincing wins over Sleepy Hollow, Mamaroneck and Lakeland, will host four-time defending Section 1 Class A champion Pearl River at noon Saturday.
This will be the first meeting between the teams since the 2011 Section 1 Class A softball championship. Pearl River downed Pelham in a semifinal last year before beating Eastchester for the title.
"We feel this is going to be a special season, and our game with Pearl River is our first big test of how special it will be," senior and catcher Samantha Wright said. "One of our goals going into every game is to play seven hard and focused innings. And if we can do that there is no reason we can't win this game."
Kelly Keith, who is coming off a shutout against Lakeland, agreed.
"Our team has eight seniors, and we've been playing together for a very long time now," Keith said. "We want this so bad, and we have been working as hard as we can to make it happen."
