PELHAM, N.Y. -- Once the 2010-11 school year finished, the Pelham varsity volleyball could not wait for the new year to begin.
Pelham learned that its opening match of the 2011 season would be with Hendrick Hudson, the same team that beat the Pelicans in the Section 1 Class A final in 2010. Hen Hud travels to Pelham for the opener, Tuesday, 4:15 p.m.
Coach (Mark) Finegan told us at the beginning of the summer league, senior tri-captain Loren Cecil said. It was really surprising. We were not expecting that in our first match. We have never played Hen Hud during the regular season, but we know that Coach Finegan wanted to get us the most challenging schedule. What better way to start the season than playing Hen Hud.
When Pelham learned Hen Hud would be its first opponent, the Pelicans began focusing on preparing themselves.
We got really excited about it and this gave us more motivation over the summer to work even harder and be prepared as possible for it.
Pelham will enter its season opener off of a scrimmage-filled week. The Pelicans played in three scrimmages and also had practice on Labor Day.
We have not done that, practice on Labor Day, in the past, Cecil said. Weve been working hard and we dont want to slack off. We want to get everyone ready for this game.
