PELHAM, N.Y. Swimmers from the Pelham Country Club descended on the pool at Playland Amusement Park in Rye on Tuesday for the 87th annual Westchester County Swimming Association Counties Swimming Championships.
Club teams from throughout the county gathered for the four-day event, which runs from Monday to Thursday.
Second-year coach Greg Lau said the event provides a chance for his swimmers to loosen up and enjoy themselves.
The county championships is always a great end-of-the-summer event, Lau said. The kids really look forward to coming here. They enjoy seeing their friends from the other clubs and competing against them from all over Westchester County.
Pelham Country Club sent 40 swimmers, both year-round devotees and summer fun-lovers, to the championships. But the unifying theme for each of them was the enjoyment.
This is a fun event for them, Lau said. Its competitive. We like to do our best, but they really look forward to the relays. We have some great relays this year. So thats really the highlight of the summer, is the kids on our team getting together and getting to compete against the other clubs.
Sixteen-year-old Tara Deverna spent some time before the races began Tuesday getting a back rub from a teammate. She swam the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley events on Monday and would swim the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard freestyle relay, 100-yard freestyle and medley relay events before the week ended.
This is her seventh year at the county championships, and the friendships and camaraderie keep her coming back for more.
You cant walk up and down and not walk into someone you know or swam with or against before, one of your friends, Deverna said.
