A popular New Rochelle High School coach has “chopped his locks” to honor his mother who passed away from lung cancer.

In front of his entire team, New Rochelle High School hockey coach Paul Viggiano - who is also an official at Westchester-based AG Williams Painting Company - recently shaved his head to both honor his mother, Nancy, and live up to a promise he made to his players for clinching the league championship.

Viggiano made a pronouncement to his team that if they clinched the league championship, he would cut his hair after growing it out for two years. Once the championship was secured, his players were ready in the locker room with the shears.

Viggiano’s ponytail is now a thing of the past and it has been donated to Locks of Love at the suggestion of freelance Hair and Makeup Artist Maria Licari.

With his ponytail a thing of the past, Viggiano praised his team, noting that they’ve made a contribution to supporting cancer awareness throughout the entire hockey season.

“Our team all decided to take it to the next level and have our entire team make a contribution to the cause - they wore pink stickers on their helmets throughout the season. They were also very supportive of my donation to Locks of Love, especially after I explained to them why I was doing it. Many of them give back on their own in the community whether it is leadership positions, mentor programs, volunteering at the youth hockey league and much more. They get it. They get the message that we are trying to teach - If everyone gives back a little bit, the sum adds up and it goes a long way,”
