Mount Vernon Falls In State AA Basketball Semifinal

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. – While it may be the NCAA Tournament taking center stage nationally this weekend, it was some of Mount Vernon’s top high school talents that had a chance to shine in a tough loss to Shenendehowa in the Class AA state semifinal on Saturday afternoon.

Led by sophomore guard Marco Morency’s 15 points, the top seeded Knights (19-3) kept things close against the undefeated Plainsmen, but a second half comeback fell just short as Shenendehowa claimed a 60-52 victory.

It will be a quick turnaround for the Plainsmen (24-0), who will face 11th seeded Brentwood – who scored victories over Baldwin and Aquinas Institute to reach the final – at the Glens Falls Civic Center on Sunday afternoon for the state title.

Seeking their third title in five years – and fifth in the past decade - Mount Vernon kept things close against Shenendehowa behind a barrage of deep threes from their sharpshooters. The Knights took the lead with a minute to go in the third on Morency’s third three of the game, but would cough it up and never see it again after Kevin Huerter hit a three pointer to close out the quarter, giving the Plainsmen a 46-45 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

The Knights would struggle in the final quarter, scoring just seven points on one field goal. Brandon Fischer, Huerter and Luke Hicks each knocked down a pair of free throws down the stretch for Shenendehowa to extinguish any hope for Mount Vernon fans.

James Whitshire added 11 points for the Knights, with Justin Alleyne contributing five, including a three.
