Director Of Technology At Pelham Schools To Receive Pioneer Award

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. -- The Lower Hudson Regional Information Center will present three teachers, one director of technology and representatives of a local school district with Pioneer Awards at the Edith Macy Conference Center in Briarcliff Manor on Friday.

The event begins at 8:30 a.m. with a keynote presentation from Ramsey Musallam, a chemistry teacher in the San Francisco area whose mission is to “meaningfully integrate multimedia into a hands-on, inquiry-based learning cycle” and to empower other educators to do likewise.  The title of Musallam’s presentation is called “Sparking Student Inquiry.”

Mussalam is a vocal advocate for tools like flipteaching, tabcasting, video podcasting and screencasting. He manages the blog Cycles of Learning, which provides tutorials to teachers on the latest technology tools.

This year’s awards ceremony will be held at 12:30 p.m., and the following district and teachers will receive awards:

  • The Tuckahoe School District
  • Michael Tromblee, director of technology at Pelham Schools
  • Anthony Stirpe, a scriptwriting and film literacy teacher in the ELA department at New Rochelle High School 
  • Heidi Bernasconi, a science teacher at North High School in the Clarkstown School District
  • Joanee Tonkin, a second-grade teacher in the North Rockland School District

The Pioneer Awards are an annual accolade that honors schools districts, teachers and administrators who embrace technology and go above and beyond to make 21st century instructional technology available to students.
