They are among 16,000 students chosen and represent less than 1 percent of the 1.5 million students from across the country who competed. They represent the highest scoring entrants from New York based on scores on the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
The sciences and history are two biggest interests of Daniel. This year, he is studying AP European History, AP US Government and Politics, AP Physics, AP English, Criminal Justice ad Photography. He is an award-winning member of the Science Olympiad and Model UN team, as well as a member of crew for Sock n Buskin.
Sciences and the arts top the focus of Miranda’s attention. She currently is enrolled in AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP English and AP Psychology and will submit her portfolio for AP Studio Art. She plays the piano, is enrolled in a pre-college music program at Queens College and teaches piano after school. She is a member of the Tri M Music Honor Society and is considering exploring computer science and art in the future.
To become a finalist, semifinalists and their high school must submit a detailed scholarship application in which they provide information about their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.
