PELHAM, N.Y. -- State Sen. Jeff Klein handed out Chromebooks to eighth-graders at Pelham Memorial High School/Middle School at an evening celebration on Monday, Sept. 29.
The senator secured the technology through a $100,000 grant for the Pelham school district. At the Chromebook distribution event, Klein announced another $100,000 round of funding for the Pelham school district, which will be used to expand the one Chromebook per student program. “Bringing our classrooms to modern times requires upgrades in technology," said Klein, D-Bronx/Westchester.
"I’m proud that I secured funding so that every eighth-grader and ninth-grader in the Pelham school district can learn with the most advanced tools available. We will grow this initiative here in Pelham through another $100,000 grant and match more students to computers so that they could benefit from the Google Apps for Education program.” More than 200 eighth-grade students received Chromebooks and cases on Monday night. On Tuesday, Oct. 14, more than 200 ninth-graders will get their Chromebooks and cases. Using the Google Apps for Education program, teachers will help students do research and collaborative, project-based work. Already schools in Clarkstown, Ramapo, Nanuet, Scarsdale, Ossining, Carmel, Hastings-on-Hudson, Yorktown and Valhalla work with the Google Apps for Education program. “Some of the most important hallmarks of public education include the provisions of equity, collaboration and innovation," said Pelham Schools Superintendent Peter Giarizzo.
"Sen. Klein is a dream-maker for our students in Pelham, and we are so thankful for his generosity. Each and every eighth- and ninth-grader in Pelham will now have access to cutting-edge technology that will prepare them as 21st-century learners who are collaborative, reflective, balanced, principled and motivated by inquiry. We could not have come as far as we have without him and look forward to all the amazing things that this project will do for our students.”
