Also on the ballot, both school board members were re-elected. Anne Capeci received 732 votes and Robert Johnson received 550 votes, defeating Richard Cuddy at 415 and Edward Del Monte Jr. at 265.

There were 49 absentee ballots cast, which were not counted Tuesday night because they would not have changed the outcome. Turnout was lower than usual, according to one of the poll workers.

With 1,012 ballots tallied, 69.45 percent voted in  favor of the budget, which complies with the state-mandated tax cap. The district plans to increase the tax levy 3.89 percent.

Property owners can determine their 2014-2015 school tax rate by plugging their property's assessed value into a calculator on the district website.

The budget added several positions and programs thanks in large part to a $1 million increase in state aid this year. The district was able to:

  • Add one special education teacher at King Street School
  • Add one school psychologist at John F. Kennedy School
  • Add home language arts teachers at Edison and Park Avenue schools
  • Add another 7th Grade Academy and foreign language class at the middle school
  • Reduce class sizes at the middle school
  • Create an intel science research program and reinstate PSTA testing opportunities at the high school
  • Add clubs and department supervisors at the high school
  • Add more course offerings in place of study halls
  • Add girls and boys swimming teams at the high school
