Pelham Students Excited On First Day Of School

PELHAM, N.Y. – Siblings Jack, Kate and Amy Dougherty were in awe of new improvements when walking through the doors of Pelham’s Siwanoy Elementary School on their first day of school Wednesday.

“We didn’t really know what to expect,” Kate said.

They found walls repainted and new water fountains throughout the building. These were part of building improvements the Pelham Union Free School District made over the summer.

In addition to new things, the three were also excited to catch up with old friends and make new ones.

“We wanted to see our old friends,” Jack said.

Their mother, Wendy Kousaie, said her children were well-prepared for the first day.

“They have great teachers,” she said. “We are ready for the school year.”

Kindergarten through fifth-grade students have half-days Thursday and Friday. That will be followed by a 1:15 p.m. dismissal time Monday. Kindergartners start their full-day schedule Tuesday.

At the middle and high schools, students enter their second day Thursday.
