PELHAM, N.Y. -- Pelham's school district and Board of Education have set goals for the school year to meet its "quest for continuous improvement," Superintendent of Schools Peter Giarrizzo told parents.
"Progress is more meaningful than perfection. Our imperative must always be to wonder what we can do to be the spark that lights a fire," Giarrizzo wrote in a letter to parents.
He said the district wants to "ensure equity and excellence for all students both horizontally and vertically."
To do so, it plans to do the following:
- Develop a five-year strategic plan.
- Build a budget that balances the constraints associated with the tax-cap and balances the preservation of program, staffing and operational efficiencies.
- Increase opportunities for community engagement.
- Work toward the settlement of fair, meaningful contracts with teachers, administrators and building services units.
Giarrizzo said the district's focus this year will be on differentiated instruction, which is lessons taught to meet the needs of each student.
"Lastly, under my direct leadership we will explore our ability to promote a deeper commitment to caring, respect, equity, and fairness in all of our schools through a diversity task force. The task force will study these issues through multiple lenses so that we can improve our ability to provide our students with access to a socially just total school program," he said. "I asked that the faculty to begin thinking about how they can contribute to this positive work at the classroom, school, and district levels."
