Pelham Schools To Appoint New Assistant Superintendent

PELHAM, N.Y. -- Steven Garcia will be appointed the new assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and personnel for the Pelham Union Free School District, the district has announced.

Garcia will be officially appointed at the April 23 meeting of the Pelham Board of Education. He will replace Superintendent-Select Peter Giarrizzo, who officially begins his new job July 1.

“He is intelligent, articulate and a learner and will partner with me to bring our schools to the next level," Giarrizzo said of Garcia. "He consistently demonstrated core values that focus on supporting a rich and challenging educational experience for all students. He believes in a collaborative approach with teachers, administrators, parents and all stakeholders to achieve this goal.”

Garcia is currently principal of Valhalla Middle School, serves as chairman of the K-12 Common Core & 21st Century Learning Committee and represents Valhalla Schools as a member of the Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES Curriculum Council.  

He received his master's and doctorate of education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and his certificate of advanced study in educational administration from the State University of New York at New Paltz.

Starting out a as high school social studies teacher, Garcia taught at Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains and then at Walter Panas High School in Cortlandt Manor. 

He was one of 18 candidates screened from a pool of 123 resumes received for this position.  

The Board of Education is also scheduled to adopt the school budget for 2013-14 at the April 23 meeting. The meeting will be at 8 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
