Pelham Math Committee Creates Q&A Clips

PELHAM, N.Y. – In order to answer the specific questions that parents have, the Pelham Math Committee has “created a library of video clips from its Community Math Night” event, according to the organization.

The organization, which is looking to replace the current mathematics curriculum in the Pelham Public Schools, said that “almost 700 viewers have already visited Pelham Math's YouTube channel.

The Pelham Math Committee started the YouTube channel in February to upload video of the meeting for those parents who could not attend and to continue adding other informative videos.

Rich Zahradnik, one of the organization’s founding members, was thrilled when they launched the YouTube channel.

"People lead busy lives,” Zahradnik said. “We knew the professors had delivered an informative and interesting presentation and this lets more of our Pelham neighbors see and hear what they had to say. It's a way to take a live event and turn it into helpful content for a much larger audience.”

The clips, which were compiled after the Jan. 25 meeting, come from three leading professors who are considered experts in math education. Numerous parents of Pelham children in elementary and high school came to the event and were told the necessary skills that their children needed to learn in order to prepare themselves for college level mathematics.

The clips range from the problems with the current math curriculum, “Investigations,” and why supplementing doesn’t work with “Investigations,” to why math practice matters and the weaknesses of “Investigations” in fifth grade, in addition to other clips.

Members of the organization are urging parents who “want the highest quality math for the children of Pelham,” to sign a petition that replaces “Investigations.”
