Pelham Group Helps Parents Through Special Education Process

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Pelham parents can learn how to navigate the special education process at an informational event Wednesday night at Pelham Middle School.

The event will be held 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Pelham Middle School Information Center, 18 Franklin Place. It is sponsored by Pelham SEPTA, the Special Education Parent Teacher Association in Pelham.  The group represents those who are interested in special education throughout the school district.

The presenter, Naomi Brickel, directs the Hudson Valley Special Education Parent Center and the Transition Resource Center, at the Westchester Institute for Human Development. The center aims to educate parents to participate and collaborate more meaningfully in the special education process.

On Wednesday night, Brickel will discuss some of the issues that come with the process and present best practices for active participation. Brickel was trained as Special Education Parent Advocate and formerly maintained a private educational consulting and advocacy practice. She is also a mother of six and  navigated the special education process for four of her children. In the past she was the co-president of New Rochelle SEPTA and Special Education co-chair for Westchester East Putnam Region of the New York State PTA.

To be eligible for special education services, children must meet criteria for 13 disability categories under the Individuals With Disabilities Act, including emotional disability, learning disability, speech/language impairment, other health impairment, autism, intellectual disability, multiple disabilities, visual impairment, deafness, deaf-blindness, traumatic brain injury, orthopedic impairment, or hearing impairment.

From an initial evaluation to identifying a child’s needs to developing an individual education plan through the Committee for Special Education. The committee is made up of special education teachers, administrators, psychologists, social workers, parental representatives and other staff.
