PELHAM, N.Y. – Newly appointed Superintendent of Pelham Schools Peter Giarrizzo challenged teachers, administrators, students, board members and residents to “raise our game.”

“Let’s work together every day to help every student excel and soar to new heights,” Giarrizzo said at a meeting of the Pelham school board Monday night. “I wake up every morning, and I give myself this same challenge. Take this challenge with me, and you will have no stronger partner.”

Giarrizzo says in turn, he hopes to be challenged with fresh ideas on how to improve the school district moving forward. “We all know there is typically no shortage of opinion in Pelham — this makes us stronger,” he said. “Diversity of opinion helps us to move forward, too, because if we are all agreeing al the time then someone is definitely not thinking.”

Giarrizzo is assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and personnel. For the next six months, he will work alongside Interim Superintendent Charles Wilson, who took over Jan. 1 after Dennis Lauro retired.

Wilson will continue to serve as interim superintendent until Giarrizzo officially takes his post July 1 for a three-year term. In his first year, Giarrizzo is contracted to receive a salary of $230,000.

When he assumes his new office, Giarrizzo says he will engage in a series of interviews with stakeholders across Pelham and use this feedback in developing the district’s strategic plan for the next three to five years and beyond.

“We have a lot to do and it can be easily overwhelming," he said. "However, I want to assure you that together we will accomplish terrific things for our students.”
