WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - A Mount Vernon educator has been nominated as one of the top special education administrators in the state.

Felicia Gaon, the Mount Vernon School District’s Director of Student Services has been nominated for Special Education Administrator of the Year by the New York Council of Administrators of Special Education.

Goan was nominated by Mount Vernon Schools Superintendent Kenneth Hailton, and is among a pool of “highly qualified and highly regarded special education administrators from across New York State who were also nominated for this prestigious career achievement award.”

“Ms. Gaon engages with other departments and administrative leadership to create a cross-collaborative environment for educational excellence,” Hamilton said. “Her conscientious work and diligence has greatly benefitted the special needs students in our district.”

Goan began her career on Long Island at Nassau BOCES, serving as a school counselor for alternative and special education programs for nearly two decades. She proceeded to become the Chief District Administrator for Special Education and Pupil Personnel Services in North Babylon and for Rockland BOCES as an assistant principal at the Jesse Kaplan School.

Following her stay in Rockland, she took her talents to Mount Vernon, where she took over her current position.

“I am honored to have been nominated for this award for work that I find so fulfilling,” Gaon said. “Working to provide the best education possible for students with disabilities is my passion, and I’m fortunate to have the support of outstanding teachers and administrators in the Mount Vernon City School District.”
